Obstetrics Q & A

What is an obstetrician?

Dr. Fish is a highly trained obstetrician who provides care for you through your pregnancy and delivery. He also handles your postnatal care to ensure your health as a new mother and the health of your new baby.

Handling all facets of your pregnancy, Dr. Fish focuses on routine examinations to monitor the development of your baby. He can also address any existing health issues that may affect  your pregnancy, such as diabetes.

Dr. Fish can also monitor and manage high-risk pregnancies if you are over 35 or are carrying multiples.

What services does an obstetrician offer?

Dr. Fish provides comprehensive pregnancy and sexual health services, including:

  • Prenatal care
  • Labor and delivery
  • Birth control counseling
  • Infertility diagnosis and treatment
  • Sexually transmitted disease screenings

During your initial consultation, Dr. Fish discusses your medical history, your family history, and any health factors that can impact your pregnancy, such as chronic illness, smoking, alcohol use, and any medications you take.

How often do I need to see an obstetrician throughout my pregnancy?

Once he confirms your pregnancy through a urine or blood test, Dr. Fish performs a physical examination to determine how far along you are in your pregnancy and your anticipated due date. He also ensures your overall health and may recommend prenatal vitamins and lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet, to promote a healthy pregnancy.

Following your initial appointment, Dr. Fish usually recommends monthly visits to monitor the development of your baby. If you have existing medical issues, Dr. Fish may suggest more frequent visits.

Once you reach week 28 of your pregnancy, Dr. Fish schedules two visits a month until you reach week 36. From that time until you deliver, you should see Dr. Fish once a week for routine monitoring of you and your baby.

What can I expect during prenatal appointments?

During your routine prenatal appointments, you can expect to have your vitals taken, including your heart rate, weight, and blood pressure. As you progress in your pregnancy, Dr. Fish measures your stomach to check the growth of your baby.

Dr. Fish also uses an ultrasound to see a close-up view of your baby’s development at various stages. The ultrasound imaging test can also identify the sex of your baby if you wish to know.Throughout your pregnancy, you may also undergo additional screenings and blood work.

Dr. Fish gives you his full attention during each of your prenatal appointments to ensure he addresses all of your questions and concerns about your pregnancy. You can also use the patient portal to contact Dr. Fish and his staff.
